  1. Maggie’s love for Levi is real, but so are the lies, coercion, and catastrophic choices built into that love. Did you find her sympathetic, and if so, when did your sympathy deepen, collapse, or become morally uncomfortable?

  2. John is abusive, controlling, and often terrifying, yet the novel also reveals guilt, damage, and a complicated attachment to his family. Did the book make him sympathetic in any meaningful way, or did those glimpses only make him more unsettling?

  3. Maggie and John both believe they are protecting Levi, but their versions of protection look very different. Is either parent truly acting in his best interest, or are both mostly serving their own needs?

  4. Domestic abuse shapes nearly every major relationship and decision in the novel, not just through visible violence but through fear, secrecy, distorted loyalty, and survival logic. How does the novel show the way abuse reorganizes a family’s moral world?

  5. At what point does Levi move from helplessness to imagining action of his own?

  6. When Levi first connects with Doley, do you think he already knows what he needs from him, or does that purpose emerge over time? Does Doley enable something in Levi, or reveal something that was already there?

  7. Doley first offers to help Levi kill John, later admits he deliberately did not bring the bullets, and on Halloween tells Levi that pulling the trigger would make him no better than the hole-digging adults. Did Doley change over the course of the novel, or was that moral line always in him, only brought out by his bond with Levi?

  8. Sebastian helps set multiple tragedies in motion, but he is far from the only person making destructive choices. How much responsibility do you place on him, and where do you see that responsibility shared by others?

  9. What role does Lana play in Maggie’s movement toward action? Does she push Maggie to confront what she already knows, or simply make it harder for her to keep avoiding it?

  10. How did you read Maggie’s use of religious language? Does it reflect belief, self-justification, or something more unstable?

  11. Calvin is close enough to John to sense more than he admits, yet he chooses not to know certain things. How did you read that choice: loyalty, self-protection, denial, or a form of complicity?

  12. Silence takes many shapes in the book—as a weapon, as protection, as self-preservation, and as complicity. By the end, what does the title Every Silent Thing come to mean to you, and how does silence function differently for Maggie, John, Levi, and Doley?

  13. Did you find the ending satisfying? Which parts felt resolved, which remained productively unsettled, and were any unanswered questions frustrating rather than purposeful?

  14. After the ending, what do you believe will happen next for these characters? What feels likely, and what feels uncertain?
